Check out this video on YouTube for some good advice...(Peter Barton's RS Aero primer video)

In brief, the Cunningham is very important when it gets windy to flatten the top part of the sail - so pull it tight.
The kicker should also be tight to make it easier to handle unless you are in big waves.
The outhaul should be quite tight but not so tight that the sail flaps at the foot.
From then on it is fairly generic boat handling skills - keep it flat, let the main sheet out in gusts etc.

Cliff I have the same problem when I sail upwind in lind of  heavy weather.

I tried to make the boat flat, boat did not move forward smoothly but hill and reverse hill  over and over.

I found some small tips(It could not be helpful though).
Vang should be set with sufficient lenght from the first time set-up to pull it on hard.

Cunnnigham and  outhail should be pull tight and you'd better sit on the boat not too backward.
In my experience, Laser has CLR much front than CE so that we should sit little back on the boat in gusty condition. but Aero does not.
It means that you will feel less weather helm than on laser.
sitting backwarad means bow can pitch much more and make the boat slow.

I am an absolute beginner to sailing and have an Aero 5. The sail looks very deep. Upwind I sail with the boom over the corner of the transom. Is this correct? I find if I try to point high the front of the sail starts flapping. But if I back off I am overpowered and start capsizing. This is with about 15 knots wind. At 68 kg I am heavier than normal for this sail size so should have no issue keeping the boat flat.

Should I apply heaps of Cunningham and/or outhaul to flatten the sail?

All advice and or tips are welcome.

Thanks
Cliff
