Has anyone ever tried any of the drones that will follow behind you. I've seen them used in mountain biking but could be cool on a boat. You attach a fob to yourself And it follows a set distance behind

Just seen this. Are you making these available to purchase (mast top mount). Cheers David

 Hi

Mast top mount was just pushed into the top of the mast.
I put small ribs for an interference fit
The slot is to fit around the back of the nuts and bolts holding on the halyard, this stops it twisting
I started making the mount bigger and stronger but then realised I wanted to make sure the mount broke before the mast.
I run a safety line from the camera around the halyard eye so I dont lose the camera when the mount breaks

To circle back on this, I bodged a boom mount out of a GoPro wrist mount and some 3cm Velcro wrap and have that on the boom near the kicker loops.

I spent a bit more on a 360 camera and can see a decent amount in the footage. The parts I can't see are the sail trim and the tiller, I'm not at the point in my sailing journey where perfect sail trim is the limiting factor, I'll need to sort another angle out eventually.

The other was the boom mount which is less convincing - even with the feild of view on SuperWide

I have tried a couple of angles, first was a mast head mount which carries a tripod to gopro adaptor
This gives the overhead shot

The camera in the middle was the main target for our solution.

Next requirement was, no change at the boat and installation without tools.

I cut the glass holder in half and stuck a pole in it a put a bolt to hold the pole and a line to the camera base in case the whole thing comes in a capsize. It works. But what I don't like is view is different depending on which tack I am on. I would prefer the camera in the middle.

Here is another thought.  20mm electrical conduit - bent using a heat gun.  The suction mount is for handling glass and is from Screwfix for around £7.00.  Stuck a piece of wooden dowel in the end so the camera mount would not crush the pipe.  Two small pieces of string to the hole in the end of the gunnel keep it steady.  Suction cups have to be attached first then the pipe is slid through and a bolt with a wing nut secures it.  Works!

Thank you. I like the idea. I look forward to seeing the final version.

This is not the final version. It is fixed only with elastics, so that the rudder can be moved completely.

It will look nicer on the top and every camera can bei mounted and gives a picture from the back of the boat.

I would appreciate if you could post a picture. I won't be at Europeans.

Michael, that sounds pretty interesting. I won't be at the European's but I look forward to seeing what you have all worked out

I look forward to seeing this too, been trying to figure out a way to mount a camera for a while.

This is exciting news.  so many contraptions out there now...most cumbersome and creative to get that "perfect" angle.  Can't wait to see the final product.

Hi Gordon,

the German RS Aero Class organisation is working on this subject, we are not completly finished, but we have developped a very clever mounting feature especially for the Aeros, where you can mount any camera device in a perfect position. For the European champion ship we plan to bring samples to UK.

Best regards

Michael

Hi folks,

I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of my Aero. I'm a pretty decent crew but it's been a long time since I've helmed a singlehander so I've got a lot of improving to do.

There's nothing like video to keep you honest so I was thinking of picking up a GoPro or similar to film my attempts and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for cameras, and how to mount them to the boat?

Best

-Gordon
