Thomas Beneker, Germany
It is sad news that I hear Thomas Beneker passed away on the night of Sunday 13th June, with no obvious cause and peacefully it seems.
He had enjoyed a nice training weekend in Bad Zwischenahn near Bremen. The RS Aero community of Germany's north are shocked and saddened. Peter Haupt, a local RS Aero sailor and friend, has said; 'Thomas was an amiable person and always helpful. He showed good character especially when dealing with kids. Lately he and Frank Wille did a lot together to establish Bad Zwischenahn as a key RS Aero location with ten boats on the water last month.'
I first met Thomas at the Lago Maggiore International RS Aero Regatta in 2019 when he was new to the Class and racing in the German Class' demo boat #1326. Thomas did a great job to identify an advantage on the Cannobio shoreline on the right and came in ahead of the fleet to the windward mark a couple of times.
Thomas was the first competitor to enter our RS Aero European Championship at Garda this year, even though the entry only opened after his death. He had spotted it opening momentarily a month earlier and signed up immediately! We look forward to remembering him together there. I will be looking for him on the right again!
We must all cherish every day. Sail on Thomas!
