Home >> General Discussion >> Club Series - single entry for multiple rigs
Hello Jonathan,

Here at Poole Yacht Club we have a combined Aero/Laser fleet which allows rig swapping.  We score a series on the basis of the largest rig used and use Local PYs(as calculated by the RYA pys website).  This approach, which we have used for about 3 years seems to strike the right balance in terms of getting people on the water in a safe manner and having fun and competitive races(emphasis on fun).  If a sailor changes boat that becomes a new entry.  Our series last 7 or 8 weeks at one race a week and 2-3 series in progress at any one time.

We allow rig swapping. In fact we allow boat swapping so you can sail any boat. The sailor is the entry not the boat for us. We have sailors who normally sail ab2 person boat but grap a single hander is crew not there. Others who sail a 200 or 400 depending on wind then lasers toppers and aeros who chose rig for the conditions. The key is getting maximum enjoyment from sailing and that means choosing appropriate rig or boat to sail. I do the scoring... a bit painful but I make separate entries fir each boat sailed but then add a manual points code for the main entry when someone sails a different boat. That avoids changing handicaps and makes RYA handicap returns much easier.

Hi Jonathan
Yes. At Highcliffe Sailing Club we allow multiple rigs.
The PY applied is the that of the largest sail used: 'shall be scored for all races in the series based upon the handicap for the faster boat if he or she uses differing rigs within a series.'
This does make for far more sensible sailing, and is essential given hazard of getting out to sea via the Run.
Kind Regards,
Lorrian

My sailing club follows the Aero CA event rules where the same boat & sailor that rigs a different size rig from the one 1st entered is considered a new entry, and scored separately.

This applies equally to Aero, Laser, D-Zero, and any other dinghy that can carry > 1 size sail.

Our club series usually span 3 months, and can see the full variation of wind and temperature conditions over a series; more so than at a 2 - 5 day event.

And leads to all sorts of 'silly sailing' for the purpose of getting a series result near the top, to wit:-
  • The 'chicken game' - I'll down size if everyone else I normally compete with does the same.  I have seen full rig Lasers out in extreme wind, all of whom capsized > 1 time, whereas the single radial stayed upright and won the race.
  • The 'I'm sailing the smallest rig I have no matter what' - an Aero that insists on sailing his 5 rig when he can easily manage his 7, and a sailor of similar height & weight is sailing a 9.
Are there any clubs out there that combine multiple rig results into one combined for the same boat sailed by the same sailor over a 2 - 3 month series?

I am not meaning a class event.

More having the freedom to rig whatever sail suits the conditions and (the developing) ability of a sailor without compromising an series end result.
